Christian Horner has been in his role of team principal almost longer than all of the nine remaining team principals combined. How is it possible? Here is an explanation.
Christian Horner became a team principal of
Red Bull Racing as soon as the team was established in
2005. He guided the team through more and less successful periods, but the leaders of the team had no doubt in his abilities.
In 2023, Horner led Red Bull to
the most dominant season in the history of Formula One. As it stands, there is no reason for the team principal to be replaced in his position, and being 50 years old, he still has a long to go.
The second longest-serving team principal on the current F1 grid is
Toto Wolff; he stepped into his role in
2013 and has had immense success with the
Mercedes team over the course of the following seasons up until 2022.
So there is an eight-year difference between Wolff and Horner, which tells us that all the remaining team principals have to be completely new, and that is exactly the case.
Many of the teams that are not as satisfied with their results as Red Bull or Mercedes change their team principals on a more frequent basis as they hope to see progress.
Current
Ferrari team principal
Frederic Vasseur is the third longest serving; he has been with Ferrari for only one year, but he has been the team principal of
Alfa Romeo Sauber since
2017.
The fourth longest-serving team principal on the current grid is
Mike Krack, who has been in his role for only
two seasons, ever since
Otmar Szafnauer left
Aston Martin.
Andrea Stella,
James Vowles, and
Alessandro Alunni Bravi have all been appointed to their roles
just ahead of the season 2023 and have only one year of experience in their roles.
Bruno Famin replaced Otmar Szafnauer in
Alpine in the middle of the season and has been an interim team principal for pretty much
half of a season.
And then, there are two newly appointed team principals, Laurent Mekies, who replaced
Franz Tost at
AlphaTauri, and
Ayao Komatsu, who will replace
Guenther Steiner in
Haas.
Both of these have technically 0 years of experience in their roles and in 2024, they will have their first chance to prove they deserve them.
