Alfa Romeo is a Swiss Formula One racing team, that has last competed in the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship.
Alfa Romeo, also known as Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake or Alfa Romeo-Ferrari, was a Formula 1 team racing under a Swiss license in 2023, and it's based in Hinwil, Zürich, Switzerland, despite holding the name of an Italian manufacturer.
The Italian manufacturer - Alfa Romeo - is one of the car manufacturers that entered the first-ever Formula One World Championship race, the 1950
British Grand Prix, at the
Silverstone Circuit.
And what a debut it was for the team. Alfa Romeo didn't just participate in that race. They took a clean sweep on the podium, placing first, second, and third, two laps ahead of the rest of the competition. Moreover, if it weren't for Juan Manuel Fnagio's oil pipe problem, the team would likely have a car in each of the first four places.
The team dominated the first two official seasons of the Formula One World Championship, winning the World Drivers' Championship in both seasons (1950 and 1951). Still, until today, those would remain their only two Championships, as no World Constructors' Championships were awarded until 1958.
Despite an incredible early success, Alfa Romeo withdrew from
Formula One after their first two seasons, and they wouldn't return until 1979. Then, the team completed seven more seasons in F1, but the results were far from their previous success.
For over three decades, fans couldn't see the Italian manufacturer that dominated the sport early on in Formula One. However, that changed in 2019 when Alfa Romeo returned to the grid but in a different way.
Alfa Romeo became the primary sponsor for Sauber, entering a technical and commercial partnership, and that's the reason why the team of the Italian manufacturer is based in Switzerland because Alfa Romeo races under Sauber Motorsport.
However, this spell in Formula One was another short and unsuccessful one for Alfa Romeo, as the team was rebranded in 2024 to Stake F1 Team.
On top of that, the team was set to end their partnership with Sauber in 2026, as Sauber was set to enter a new collaboration, this time with German manufacturer Audi.
