Historically known as the Mexican Grand Prix, fans now see a different kind of race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, Mexico. Since 2021, the race has been called the Mexico City Grand Prix.
The Mexican Grand Prix has a long history that dates back to 1962, but the first official race of the Formula One World Championship was held in Mexico in 1963, and it was in Magdalena Mixhuca.
The race then wasn't part of the calendar for over a decade, and it returned for a period between 1986 and 1992, but then it wasn't held again until 2015. When the Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1 calendar, some changes appeared.
In 2021, the race was called the Mexico City Grand Prix for the first time, and it wasn't just a simple name change but rather a strategic rebranding.
The renaming perfectly aligns with other city-centric Grand Prix, like the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Miami Grand Prix, and the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but also another renamed race, the Sao Paolo Grand Prix, previously held as the Brazilian Grand Prix.
However, except for the name, not much has changed. The race is still held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, a circuit that was built back in 1959, and the current Grand Prix modification has 17 turns over 4.304 kilometers (2.674 miles).
Since there were only two races held as the renamed Mexico City Grand Prix, it doesn't come as a surprise that there was only one winner, Max Verstappen, who won in his Red Bull in both 2021 and 2022. On the other hand, the record lap on the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was recorded in 2021 by Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, who clocked 1:17.774.
