Max Verstappen addressed the heavy criticism that he received from 1996 F1 Champion Damon Hill following the 2024 Grand Prix in Mexico City.
The Red Bull Racing F1 driver hit back at all his critics during the Thursday press conference ahead of the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix (which follows a week after the Mexico City Grand Prix).
Former F1 drivers and pundits like Martin Brundle and Damon Hill criticized the on-track behavior of the Dutchman that we've seen during the preceding race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Both former F1 drivers focused primarily on Verstappen's attempt to overtake Lando Norris into turn seven with an ambitious lunge down the inside.
While Brundle suggested the 27-year-old had to know he could have taken both himself and Norris out of the race and that his sporting attitude would taint his legacy, Hill compared Verstappen's tactics to a cartoon villain Dick Dastardly.
When asked particularly about the comments from Damon Hill, who also said that he "let himself down" during the Mexico City Grand Prix, Max Verstappen responded:
"I don't listen to those individuals. I just do my thing. I'm a three-time world champion, I think I know what I'm doing. I have my opinions, but I don't need to share them."
When further prompted on who he listens to, the Red Bull Racing driver didn't name anyone specifically, but he explained:
"[I listen to] people that are objective and close to me and not just there to stir [things up]. Some people are just being very annoying. I know who these people are, although I don't really pay a lot of attention to them anyway."
"I think I've got to this stage in my career with the right people supporting me and making my own decisions."
"[These are] good people with a good heart from the outside. The most important thing is that I know [who they are]. Some people are just a bit biased and I mean, I get it, it's fine."
