Born on October 5, 1992, Kevin Jan Magnussen is the son of four-time Le Mans winner and former
Formula 1 driver Jan Magnussen. Having an obvious connection to racing, Kevin Magnussen chose to start his career in karting as a young boy.
After moving up to Formula Ford in Denmark, Magnussen took 11 victories in 15 races dominating the championship. In 2009, Magnussen moved to Formula Renault 2.0 and finished in 2nd place after António Félix da Costa in the European Cup.
In the following years, Kevin Magnussen competed in the German Formula Three Championship (3rd in the final standings), British Formula 3 Championship with Carlin (2nd in the final standings), Masters of Formula 3 in
Zandvoort (finished 3rd).
After moving up to Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2012, Magnussen claimed 7th place in the championship. However, the Dane came back a year later, and with five victories and eight podium finishes, he claimed a well-deserved title 60 points ahead of second place Stoffel Vandoorne.
In the 2014 season, Kevin Magnussen finally took his seat in Formula 1 by replacing
Sergio Perez in
McLaren. In his first season, Magnussen also achieved his first F1 podium by scoring 2nd place at the
Australian Grand Prix.
Magnussen became the first Dane to ever achieve the F1 podium. Despite his great results in McLaren, Magnussen was demoted to a reserve drive for the 2015 season after
Fernando Alonso made his comeback to McLaren. He found a place in Renault for the 2016 season, where he scored two point-finishes - P7 in Russia and P10 in Singapore.
After joining the
Haas Formula 1 team in 2017, Magnussen had a great first two seasons with 16-point finishes in total. However, during seasons 2019 and 2020, he would often suffer with his car's performance and reliability. In 2020, both Kevin Magnussen and his teammate Romain Grosjean departed from the team.
In 2022, Haas terminated a contract with their Russian driver, Nikita Mazepin. This unexpected turn of events opened the door for a comeback of the Danish racer Kevin Magnussen into the Haas, where he is to race at least until the end of the 2024 season.
