Racing Bulls F1 team CEO Peter Bayer discussed his feelings after multiple interactions with Max Verstappen outside the F1 paddock.
Max Verstappen is one of the most controversial personalities in the paddock because of the combination of his driving style, success, and outspoken personality.
Some F1 fans love him, and some think he's arrogant, but what many who know the four-time world champion personally say is that he is the same person in front of the camera and fans as he is outside of F1.
CEO of Racing Bulls, Peter Bayer, shared his experience with the Red Bull Racing F1 driver as he remembered how he went to congratulate him after the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix - where Max Verstappen secured his Drivers' Championship title. He told RacingNews365:
"Vegas, I went to see him, to congratulate him. Again, he was standing there in his sneakers, jeans, t-shirt, with a beer, and the guy had an aura."
"Outside of the paddock, where he's not being watched by a million people, he's the kindest and nicest person you can imagine. He's genuine and so funny. He's got a great sense of humor."
"Maybe I shouldn't say that, because maybe he doesn't want people to know, but he's witty, he's very bright. Obviously, he is one of the greatest of the sport. There's absolutely no doubt about that."
"Max is a blueprint for modern Formula 1. It's being the best in karting, then going right into F1 at 17. He even provoked Jean Todt [then FIA president] to change the super license."
Verstappen's entry into F1 at the age of 17 years and 166 days caused some concern at the FIA, which decided to introduce a new rule the following year.
This new rule permitted drivers younger than 18 from being able to race in F1. However, it was later adjusted in June 2024. While the minimum age is still 18, FIA now allows for exceptions, which means it would be potentially possible for younger drivers to race in F1. Bayer added:
"As a driver, we all know what he [Max] is capable of doing with that car, but I am more impressed with how he can simply ignore all the noise and fireworks in Formula 1."
