The Jeddah Corniche Circuit is located in the Red Sea port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The circuit was opened on December 3rd, 2021, and staged the first-ever
Saudi Arabian Grand Prix 2 days later on December 5th, 2021.
The circuit in Jeddah was designed by Carsten Tilke - son of the famous circuit Architect Hermann Tilke. Both of them work at a company named Tilke Engineers & Architects, which is credited for their involvement in the construction of multiple famous circuits like
Bahrain International Circuit,
Red Bull Ring, Nürburgring,
Interlagos, and many others.
Jeddah Corniche Circuit has both longer and shorter configurations. The longer configuration is 6.174 km (3.836 miles) long with 27 turns and hosts series like Formula One, FIA F2, Porsche Carrera Cup and GT4. The shorter configuration is 3.450 km (2.144 miles) long with 12 turns and hosts series like the World Touring Car Cup.
The longer configuration circuit in Jeddah is the second longest circuit in the
F1 calendar, following
Spa-Francorchamps, which hosts the
Belgian Grand Prix. Jeddah is the longest street circuit in the F1 calendar and also the circuit with the most turns - 27.
The circuit prepared for the 2023 Jeddah Grand Prix contained 2 DRS zones, however, the circuit is prepared to contain 3 DRS zones if desired in the future. The track is characteristic of tight, fast, and sweeping turns.
Multiple drivers have been caught out by the unforgiving nature of the circuit in the past. One example is
Max Verstappen during qualification for the 2021 Jeddah Grand Prix. The Dutch driver was on a pole-winning lap with a comfortable margin; however, he got caught out on the exit of the last turn and could not finish the lap.
Jeddah Grand Prix is one of the few night races in the calendar amongst the
Bahrain Grand Prix, the
Las Vegas Grand Prix, the
Qatar Grand Prix, and the
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
