Christian Horner shared his opinion on
Lewis Hamilton's surprising move from
Mercedes to
Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season.
Why did Lewis Hamilton suddenly make the decision to change his long-term team, Mercedes? That is one of the main questions that are being discussed at the moment.
After a
recent launch of Red Bull's 2024 challenger RB20, Christian Horner gave his two cents on the situation, suggesting there had to be something that enticed the 39-year-old to make the move. As reported by Sports Illustrated, he said:
"First of all, I think everybody was surprised, even his existing team [Mercedes], about Lewis’ move to Ferrari. He’s obviously seen something there that he believes in that serves him better than staying where he is. I think for F1, a Lewis-Ferrari tie-up is really exciting."
The seven-time World Champion's decision seems strange, especially when considering that Mercedes has a much better record over the last ten years in F1.
Did Ferrari show Hamilton something promising that might make him reconsider his position, or does he
just want to achieve his childhood dream, be a driver for Ferrari, and even be the one who brings success back to the Italian team?
"He’s still got this season to go with this existing team, but he’s proven in the past he’s not shy of making brave decisions."
In 2012, the Briton was a McLaren (which was doing much better than Mercedes) driver, and he made the decision to change teams, which made no sense to anyone at the time.
"His move from McLaren to Mercedes for all intents and purposes looked not to be the right one at the time but proved to be an inspired one."
As Horner said, the move from McLaren to Mercedes made no sense, but looking at it with the benefit of hindsight, Hamilton couldn't have done anything better.
Could this be another surprising move that proves to be the right one in the future? The team principal of the
Red Bull Racing F1 team added:
"I am sure he would have thought about it long and hard. For Formula 1, a Hamilton-Ferrari tie-up is pretty exciting."
