Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll admitted his more experienced teammate Fernando Alonso was "faster and better" in 2023.
The 2023 season was the first season Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso drove alongside each other as teammates. The Spanish Matador came into the team to replace retiring Sebastian Vettel.
On the one hand, Stroll should have had an advantage over the double World Champion because of the familiarity with the team. On the other hand, he suffered a wrist injury at the beginning of the season, which didn't help him.
At the end of the year, Alonso beat the 25-year-old by 130 points (a very significant margin). Looking back at the season, Stroll admitted he wasn't fast enough. According to Formule1.nl, he said:
"Fernando was faster and better. I will have to improve compared to him in order to help the team. But I can do that, I believe in that."
On the other hand, the Canadian driver mentioned he was unlucky on multiple occasions during the season, which played a big role in the overall result at the season's end.
"But we didn't have much luck either; things didn't go the way we wanted a few times. There's little you can do about that."
Stroll lately mentioned he wants to beat whoever is his teammate regardless of how talented they are, and his plan was to kick some butt going into the 2024 season. He added:
"The most important thing in 2024 is that we focus on what we can control. And that we build on the things that went well. That is important for me and the team."
Aston Martin is one of the five teams equipped to compete for the Championship in 2024. The team principal, Mike Krack, suggested his team might hit their first win this year. Could Stroll be the one to achieve it?
