Toto Wolff recently addressed the high and low points of the season for the Mercedes Formula One team.
Mercedes went through a lot throughout the 2023 season. The team suffered multiple retirements both because of technical issues and driver mistakes, as well as even a disqualification.
On the other hand, the Mercedes F1 team principal, Toto Wolff, suggested that the 2023 United States Grand Prix, after Lewis Hamilton got disqualified, was Mercedes's best race of the 2023 season.
During the Mercedes 2023 season review YouTube video, the team principal, Toto Wolff, was asked to identify the proudest and the lowest points of the season, and he said:
"It's difficult because there have been so many where we had high expectations, and it kind of didn't come as we expected."
One of the races that went completely opposite to what the team expected was the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, where Hamilton finished eighth, and George Russell had to retire because of technical issues. Wolff explained:
"I believe maybe Brazil because that was such a good race for us in 2022. We dominated the whole weekend, the sprint race and the main race. And then, the 2023, the opposite was the case. So maybe that was the bad moment."
The Austrian team principal called the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend the worst in the last 13 years so it makes sense he now marked it as the low point of the season.
Many might not expect to hear this from Wolff, but he marked achievement of the second place in the Championship after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as the high point of the season for Mercedes.
The reason it was unexpected is that Mercedes has won eight consecutive Constructors Championship titles in a row, and the team principal himself mentioned multiple times Mercedes's only goal is first place.
"Good moment was Sunday night in Abu Dhabi. I never paid big attention to P2, P3. You want to come in P1, but then doing it and being able to score, that was emotionally and morally important for the team. And that was a good moment."
