Red Bull Racing driver
Max Verstappen won the last race of the 2023 season - the
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at
Yas Marina Circuit.
While the
Red Bull team principal had some doubts over the Sunday race in Abu Dhabi, Max Verstappen did not disappoint and won the race by almost 18 seconds after starting from pole position.
Sergio Perez crossed the line in second place, but the five-second penalty awarded to him set him back two positions to finish in fourth place behind
George Russell in third.
Russell's third-place finish ahead of Perez and right behind
Charles Leclerc was crucial for
Mercedes in their battle with
Ferrari to secure second place in the Constructors' Championship.
The second Mercedes F1 driver,
Lewis Hamilton, finished in ninth place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It was important for the seven-time World Champion to finish ahead of
Carlos Sainz, which he did.
The Spanish Ferrari driver was about to finish the race in about P15 but was called to box before the final lap of the race due to some issues and, consequently, did not finish.
McLaren drivers
Lando Norris and
Oscar Piastri secured fourth place in the Championship for their team by finishing in fifth and sixth positions.
Aston Martin team lost the battle for fourth place in the Championship to McLaren with
Fernando Alonso crossing the line in P7 and
Lance Stroll in P10.
The Spanish matador overtook
Yuki Tsunoda just one lap before the end of the race, pushing the Japanese driver into P8. The second
AlphaTauri driver,
Daniel Ricciardo, crossed the line just outside of points in P11.
The Honey Badger put a 10-second gap between himself and two
Alpine drivers,
Pierre Gasly and
Esteban Ocon, who finished the race behind him in P12 and P13.
A seven-point lead ahead of the race at Yas Marina Circuit ended up being just enough for
Williams to keep its position in the Constructors' Championship despite both
Alex Albon and
Logan Sargeant scoring zero points today.
Today's race also didn't change anything in the battle for ninth place in the Championship, as both
Alfa Romeo's and
Haas's drivers scored zero points.
Nico Hulkenberg finished in P15,
Zhou Guanyu in P17,
Valtteri Bottas in P19, and the Danish driver
Kevin Magnussen crossed the finish line in 20th place.
