Toto Wolff pinpointed the Meredes's best race of the season during the 2023 F1 season review YouTube video.
The Silver Arrows changed their concept but couldn't quite make it work on all the tracks. Sometimes, the German team looked like the fastest team (
Singapore), and sometimes, they looked like a team that could barely compete in the midfield (
Brazil).
Asked by a fan to pick his team's best race in 2023, Toto Wolf, quite weirdly, picked the race Mercedes got disqualified from -
the United States Grand Prix.
"This might sound weird because we got disqualified, but Austin. We brought an upgrade package that worked. The car was performing well. We were hunting down the leader."
While the team has been struck with disqualification after the race, the team principal believes it does not take away from the fantastic performance his team showed.
"Now, you could say, well, you've been disqualified for a car that was too low, but the genuine performance was there, and it was an enjoyable weekend."
Wolff could have picked, for example, the
Spanish Grand Prix as Mercedes's best race, as it was the only time the team had both of its drivers on the podium, but interestingly, he didn't. He explained:
"And I've always said that I'd rather have a fast car that we haven't tuned in the right way. And obviously, you need to finish. But that was the weekend overall, seeing the correlation between the wind tunnel and the track was good."
