Red Bull Racing F1 driver
Max Verstappen won the 2023
Sao Paulo Grand Prix at
Interlagos Circuit after starting from pole position.
The Most unfortunate driver of the race was
Charles Leclerc. He lost his steering wheel in the middle of a corner due to a hydraulics issue.
The
Ferrari driver was sent into the barrier as a result and had to retire his car. Leclerc would have had a great chance for a decent result after qualifying in second place, but all his hopes were ruined before the race even began.
It didn't take long after the start for a safety car to be deployed.
Alex Albon and
Kevin Magnussen were sent spinning into the barriers on the right side of turn one as a result of an incident with
Nico Hulkenberg.
The German driver got squeezed between his own teammate Magnussen and Albon who was overtaking him from the right-hand side.
Hulkenberg's front right wheel made contact with the left rear wheel of Albon's
Williams, which put Albon into an uncontrollable drift, collecting Magnunssen on his way into the barrier.
Magnussen then damaged the rear of
Oscar Piastri's
McLaren. There was also a loose tire that flew into
AlphaTauri of
Daniel Ricciardo and damaged his car as well.
Magnussen and Albon had to retire, while Piastri and Ricciardo had some repairs done to their cars and had to start from a pit lane lap down on everybody else, and finished P14 and P13.
Hulkenberg could continue in the race, but he was only fast enough for P12 in the end. Albon's teammate
Logan Sargeant finished on the cusp of point-scoring positions in P11.
Joining the club of unlucky drivers,
Zhou Guanyu and
Valtteri Bottas both had to retire their
Alfa Romeo's on lap 22 and lap 40, scoring zero points for the team.
Mercedes drivers saw a confirmation of a lack of pace from Sunday's Sprint race.
Lewis Hamilton, starting from P5, finished in P8, and
George Russell, who looked a bit faster at one point, had to retire his car on lap 58.
Both
Alpine drivers capitalized on the misfortune of multiple drivers.
Esteban Ocon finished in P10, and his teammate
Pierre Gasly scored a P7 finish in front of Hamilton.
Yuki Tsunoda brought home two more points for his team by finishing in P9. In total, the Japanese driver added five points to the Constructors' Championship for his team and himself in Sao Paulo.
Carlos Sainz finished in P6, which might not look like the best result, but he still secured more points than Mercedes drivers, which closed the gap in the Constructors' Championship to 20 points with two race weekends to go.
Aston Martin drivers finally had another amazing weekend after
three consecutive bad results in Mexico City,
Austin, and
Qatar.
Lance Stroll finished fifth and
Fernando Alonso scored the eighth podium of the season.
Finishing ahead of Fernando Alonso was
Lando Norris in P2 and the winner of the race - Max Verstappen. Verstappen's Red Bull teammate
Sergio Perez missed out on the podium by 0.058 seconds and finished P4.
