Aston Martin team principal
Mike Krack reflected on the miserable result of the Aston Martin F1 team at the 2023
Mexico City Grand Prix.
Going into the weekend at
Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Aston Martin was hoping for an improvement after their newly upgraded car failed the team at the
United States Grand Prix.
The team did not start the weekend right away when neither of the Aston Martin drivers
reached the top ten in qualifying. Consequently,
Fernando Alonso had to start the race from P13 and
Lance Stroll from P20.
The race turned out even worse for the British team. Their Spanish driver lacked pace from the first lap of the race and was called to retire on lap 47.
His Canadian teammate had a bit more pace in hand. However, it was not enough to fight for the top ten. What's more, Stroll also had to retire his car after a lap 66 incident with
Valtteri Bottas on
Alfa Romeo.
Bottas was awarded a five-second penalty after the end of the race for the incident involving Lance Stroll in turn number 13. Nevertheless, neither of the Aston Martin finished the race. The team principal, Mike Krack, told the media:
"We have not been competitive this weekend and we did not give Lance and Fernando the car they needed to compete for points."
While the Aston Martin team already focuses on the development of the car for season 2024, Krack revealed nobody in the team is happy with the current situation.
"Nobody in the team is happy with our current form, but we are a strong unit and will continue to all work together to push for improvements."
The Aston Martin team principal also mentioned the track characteristics did not suit their cars. However, he hopes to be more competitive during this week's race weekend in
Sao Paulo.
"It is fair to say the circuit characteristics did not play to our strengths today, but we will work hard to be more competitive at Interlagos [Brazil] next weekend."
