Christian Horner recently suggested that he wouldn't smash a headset like Toto Wolff during the Sudi Arabian Grand Prix 2021, as it showed the pressure getting to him.
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was the penultimate race of the 2021 season, and every single point in that race was essential for both Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, who fought for the Championship.
This race is remembered for quite a controversial moment between the two drivers. Verstappen was told to give a place back to the 39-year-old after an illegal overtake.
When he slowed down on the straight, it wasn't clear to the seven-time World Champion that he was being let to pass, and he collided with the Red Bull driver as he went into his back.
The two drivers have had multiple over-the-edge battles throughout the season, and after this collision happened, Toto Wolff lost it and smashed his headset on the table.
Red Bull Racing F1 team principal Christian Horner remembered this moment recently as he said it showed the pressure was getting to the Austrian team principal. He said in Secrets of Success:
“"Any sport is a mind game and when you see your counterpart losing it and smashing a set of headphones out you think, ‘okay, you’re feeling the pressure’, and if he’s feeling the pressure, everybody else around him is feeling the pressure because pressure permeates from the top."”
The 50-year-old dismissed the action, saying he never has done the same thing as it definitely wouldn't have a positive effect on his team. He added:
““I would never smash a set of headphones up. You know, everybody’s different. Internally, I’d have felt and mentally, I would have smashed those headphones just as hard as him, but I just wouldn’t have done it physically. I think it’s just everybody is different.”
