Red Bull Racing's technical director Pierre Wache hinted at what he believes to be the key behind his team's 2023 dominance.
No team in history of Formula 1 has ever been able to win as many races as Red Bull did last season. Now, one of the reasons is that there didn't use to be so many races.
However, even if we look at it in terms of percentage, there has not been any other team before Red Bull in the history of the sport that would be able to win 95.5% of the races.
What have been the key enablers behind this immense success? The technical director of the Red Bull Racing team, Pierre Wache, told motorsport.com:
"We put everything together. The car has some weaknesses, but not a big one. [It's] quite efficient in terms of downforce versus drag. That's clearly a key, and also [it's] quite gentle on tires for the race pace."
Red Bull achieved the pole 14 times in 22 races of the season, but even in seven of the eight remaining races, Red Bull drivers still won.
"That, I think, is one of the key [elements], because if you look at qualifying we didn't do all the poles. We just won all the races [bar one]."
Red Bull's car and drivers have been one of the primary reasons for the success, but Wache also pointed out that other teams might just be doing a bad job in the development of their cars. He explained:
"The dominance also depends on what the others did. Maybe the others made some mistakes to develop their car, because when you see the level of development that McLaren put together during the season, and the capacity they have to be closer to us with quite a bad start to the season, you say maybe the others didn't put the car together."
The fact that McLaren managed to go from the back of the grid and be arguably the second fastest in the last few races of the season certainly underlines weaknesses in their rival's development pace.
On the other hand, pretty much all the teams started closing in on Red Bull in the last few races of the season. Has it been because the team from Milton Keynes stopped their development?
Or is Red Bull perhaps losing their advantage? We have to wait for the first race of the 2024 season in Bahrain to find out.
