Red Bull Racing F1 driver Max Verstappen reflected on the progress in technical regulations determining the design of Formula One cars.
F1 cars have gone through many changes throughout the years. In the 2000s, we sew changes from V10 engines to 2.4 liter V8, which was later replaced by 1.6 liter V6 turbo-hybrid engines.
While Mercedes dominated ever since the turbo-hybrid engines were introduced, Red Bull bounced back after major rule changes in 2022.
These rules introduced new aerodynamic changes to Formula One cars in a way that would allow drivers to closely follow each other on the track for better racing and more overtakes.
Max Verstappen reflected on the effect of the rule changes almost two full seasons after they were introduced. Looking back, the Dutchman told the media:
"I think they’re a little bit better. When you look at 2020 and 2021, when we were following, the cars were really undrivable. Because I was trying really hard to follow. I do think that's still a lot better."
Even though the three-time World Champion did not have to do too much overtaking in the 2023 season, he believes the situation is better.
On the other hand, if we were to let's say compare the F2004 Ferrari driven by Michael Schumacher, to the cars that we can see on the grid in the 2023 season, the current F1 cars are much bigger and heavier, and that Verstappen's concern.
"I do think that the weight of the cars, that is for me a little bit of a concern. And maybe the general stiffness of the cars, but I do think that these cars are much better for racing. I do think the racing is a little bit better."
The 2022 and 2023 seasons offered some unbelievable racing battles on multiple tracks like Silverstone, Interlagos, and Bahrain which is proof that the changes made by FIA were indeed effective and made the sport more attractive for new fans.
