General Motors President Mark Reuss announced GM will be the official F1 engine supplier from the 2028 season to power Andretti Cadillac.
The news about the new engine supplier is huge Andretti Cadillac. Even though it is still unsure if the team will ever get to race in Formula One, having its own engine could allow Cadillac to become one of the main title contenders.
As of 2023, Formula One has four different engine suppliers: Mercedes (powers Mercedes, McLaren, Aston Martin, and Williams), Ferrari (powers Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Haas), Honda (powers Red Bull and AlphaTauri)and Renault (powers Alpine).
By 2028, there are supposed to be seven engine manufacturers. Cadillac will join along with Audi and Red Bull, which plans to start producing its own engines starting in 2026.
General Motors President Mark Reuss announced: "We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit."
In general, F1 teams with their own manufactured engines (works teams) have an advantage over teams that buy from them and have the highest chances of having the fastest car.
It is because works teams produce engines to specifically suit their own cars, whereas the teams that just buy the engines have to build the rest of their cars around them, which adds complexity. Reuss said:
"With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team."
Both Andretti and Cadillac have great experience in other motorsport series, qualifying them to compete with the best in F1. Whether or not they can actually become part of F1 remains to be seen. Reuss concluded:
"We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world."
