Sergio Perez discussed the situation concerning the negotiations about his potential future contract with Red Bull.

Sergio Perez has shown his great qualities multiple times in the past. He was doing very well even during the first four races of the most recent season, but then, everything went wrong for the Mexican driver.

It was as if he lost his mojo. He made multiple mistakes in qualifying sessions and following races, couldn't match his teammate's speed, and struggled with consistency. The Mexican driver told F1:

"We started the year really strong, but we didn’t really improve all year. It is something to keep aware of – to make the right steps in the right direction."

At one point during the 2023 season, Perez openly admitted he lost confidence in his RB19. That is a crucial factor in drivers' performances, so the 34-year-old identified he has to improve in this area going into 2024.

"There were times [last year] where I was lacking confidence. It’s important to develop that through the season, chipping away each weekend."

Checo struggled so much during the middle of the most recent season that multiple rumors started surfacing suggesting Red Bull would replace the Mexican driver with someone else in 2024 despite his contract.

These rumors proved untrue, and the Red Bull driver even managed to improve his performance towards the end of the season.

Moreover, Christian Horner stated that Red Bull might be interested in continuing with the 34-year-old even beyond the season 2024, as long as he can improve his performance.

Asked whether he had already started some negotiations with his team, Perez asserted that it isn't on his priority list at the moment. He said:

"No, not yet. It’s important for myself to see where we start, how we are doing, how we are developing. I want to see that develop through the season. From my point of view, that’s the main priority this year."
