Mercedes team principal
Toto Wolff admitted it will be a challenging task to beat
Red Bull until the regulations change in 2026.
Red Bull team took home 21 victories out of 22 races in 2023 season. The team from Milton Keynes built a superb car for arguably one of the best drivers in the world, Max Verstappen.
What's more, the great car and insane consistency and speed of the Dutchman met with 100% reliability, 0% technical issues, perfect race strategies, and fastest pit stops.
The three-time World Champion broke 14 different records throughout the season 2023 and does not leave much hope for Red Bull competitors going into 2024. Toto Wolff told the media:
"Red Bull started these regulations in 2022 with a massive advantage and was able to maintain it. We have a lot of respect for the achievement of the engineering side and the driver. Beating them under the current regulations is against the odds. That's clear."
While beating Red Bull under current regulations is definitely against the odds, Wolff pointed to big steps in progress that other teams have been able to make throughout the season.
"At the same time we've seen with McLaren where an update unlocked a second a lap time or the AlphaTauri coming strong at the end, Aston Martin over the winter that there is there is a key to unlock dramatically more performance."
On one hand, this gives Silver Arrows a chance to start all over with a plain sheet of paper. On the other hand, Wolff is aware an immense challenge awaits his team. He added:
"I think us taking this honest assessment that this car is never going to be good enough to fight for Championship we've taken the decision in spring that we've got to that we're going to go back to the drawing board and come up with something new next year but mount everest is in front of us."
