Former F1 driver Gerhard Berger asserted in a recent interview that Max Verstappen is the best driver of all time.
Gerhard Berger started racing in Formula One in 1984 when he joined team ATS powered by a BMW engine. Coincidentally, a legend of motorsport, Ayrton Senna, started his career in the same exact season.
The Austrian driver had the opportunity to compete against one of the best drivers in the sport. As a matter of fact, Berger mentioned he thought Senna was the best he had ever seen. According to Motorsport-Magazin, he said in an interview with Kronen Zeitung:
"For me, he was the best there has ever been. But if I just look at the statistics and the hard facts, then of course you have to put Michael Schumacher first and Lewis Hamilton second."
Ayrton Senna used to compete in an era of F1 when the calendar was a maximum of 16 races long, and cars used to be a lot less reliable.
So, in terms of statistics, he couldn't possibly match seven-time World Champions like Michael Schumacher or Lewis Hamilton. But what is interesting is that Berger changed his opinion recently, saying there might be a different driver that is even better than Senna.
"I said before that Senna was the best driver of all time. I have to say, I think Max Verstappen is even better now. He has skills that I haven’t even seen yet."
What Max Verstappen achieved in 2023 has never been done before. The triple World Champion won 19 out of 22 Grand Prix races of the season and broke many records no one would have imagined could be achieved. The Austrian former F1 driver added:
"It’s also interesting to see that there is such perfection. On the one hand, the team didn’t have any technical failures, they didn’t mess up any pit stops and on the other hand, a driver who drives at the limit like that didn’t make any mistakes."
