Lewis Hamilton currently stands 32 points behind Sergio Perez in the
Drivers' Championship. With two races left in the season, Perez would have to show a shocking performance this weekend to lose his P2.
The seven-time World Champion, aware of his position ahead of the race at
Las Vegas Strip Circuit, turned to Perez during Wednesday's press conference and jokingly warned the Mexican driver saying: "
I’m coming for you."
The Mercedes driver was a bit hopeful to catch up with Checo after the
Mexico City Grand Prix when the gap was much smaller, but the
Sao Paulo weak performance set Hamilton back in the championship. He said:
"He’s too far away now, to be honest. 30 points in two races, he would have to have two disasters, and I would have to be second, basically. But for me, honestly, it really doesn’t make a difference if we’re second or third."
Hamilton lately also said he
does not think his Mercedes could even be a race-winning car. On the other hand, he thinks the team had a fantastic season, given all the setbacks.
"I think we’ve still had an amazing year, given the car that we’ve had. We never thought we would be fighting for second in the constructors’ and knocking on the door of the most dominant car, probably, of our era."
Perez goes into the race with a clear goal of focusing on his own performance
as his team principal advised a while ago. The Red Bull driver told the media:
"We just have to do our own thing and make sure we maximize our next two weekends. It would be nice to secure it here, because it’s the first opportunity that we have, but other than that, I think it’s more important that we focus on having a strong finish to the season."
