The seven-time World Champion
Lewis Hamilton was named the highlight of the 2023 season after the second consecutive year without scoring a win.
Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton holds a record in Formula One for most consecutive seasons with at least one Grand Prix win.
The 38-year-old driver won a race in every season he has ever participated in up until the year 2022. That was 15 consecutive seasons.
However, things have turned around since then, and the Brit is still waiting for his next victory after two years of drought. Despite not scoring a single victory in 2023, which is highly unusual for the Mercedes driver as described above, Hamilton had some very nice moments this season.
The seven-time World Champion went through many highs and lows. In total, he scored one pole
and six podiums, and his best finish was in second place.
Asked to identify his highlight of the season, the Mercedes driver chose qualification at
Hungaroring during the
Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. He told the media:
"I think obviously Budapest was the highlight, a track that I love and somehow dethrone the Red Bull for a single moment gave us a lot of hope. And that knowing that if we just keep pushing we may get there."
In the 2023 season, Red Bull was more dominant than ever before, and it meant a lot to the 38-year-old to beat Max Verstappen by 0.003 seconds to get the pole on an arguably slower car.
Hamilton has been saying for a long time Hungaroring is one of his favorite circuits, and he proved it by achieving his incredible ninth pole position at the circuit.
By doing so, he broke the record of Ayrton Senna and
Michael Schumacher, who both achieved eight poles at the
Imola and
Suzuka circuits. Hamilton also scored eight poles at
Albert Park, but nobody in the history of F1 managed to score nine pole positions at the same circuit.
