Former Renault F1 Managing Director Cyril Abiteboul recently addressed
Red Bull's dominance and the difference between
Max Verstappen and
Sergio Perez.
Cyril Abiteboul and
Damon Hill suggest that Mercedes's dominance was down to power unit, whereas Red Bull seems to have the whole package perfectly optimized. Abiteboul told
Franceinfo:
"Mercedes' dominance was due to one element: the engine. It was exceptional. Everyone has had their ups and downs, their moments of brilliance, and their problems. But Red Bull has just walked on water."
Max Verstappen recently
said people should be able to appreciate the dominance of a team in Formula One, and Abiteboul is one of those who respect the "impressive" results:
"It's amazing because they seem impervious to all variables, be it wind, temperature or ground effect. That makes their dominance even more impressive."
On the other hand, Red Bull has two drivers, and only one of them has been so consistent. Sergio Perez has been struggling ever since the race in
Miami.
While the Mexican driver recently stated he is feeling better and
it is just a matter of time before he can show what he's got, the current gap between him and his teammate is 266 points.
Abiteboul acknowledges the difference between the two teammates. He looks at the situation more from the perspective that highlights Verstappen's strength rather than the one that suggests Perez is a bad driver.
"It's cruel. Verstappen is so strong that he is able to push a driver like Sergio Pérez, who has been through a lot, to the ground and break him. There is a lot of maturity from Red Bull and Max. I have the impression that he is much calmer."
