Pierre Gasly is currently Alpine's driver, but his contract lasts only until the end of the 2024 season. Here are three reasons why his move to Ferrari would make sense.
Ferrari's current driver lineup consists of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. Both drivers' contracts expire at the end of the season 2024.
While there have been suggestions both drivers will continue with the team, the negotiations are taking longer than expected. Ferrari is believed to be more interested in Leclerc, whom the team offered a long-term contract.
Many discussions about a potential replacement for Sainz are already taking place, and almost nobody mentions Pierre Gasly. However, here are a few reasons why the Frenchman's move to the Italian team would make sense.
Pierre Gasly is currently racing for his "national" French team - Alpine. While it is a great place for the driver, the chances of him winning the Championship with Alpine are not very high statistically speaking.
Alpine has been stuck in the midfield for quite a few years and struggles with the weak performance of its Renault power unit. Ferrari, on the other hand, was the second or third-best team on the grid at the end of 2023.
Moreover, Gasly already lives in Italy, where the base of the Ferrari team is located, and he speaks Italian. The Frenchman has been part of the Italian team - AlphaTauri for a long time, and he even won the Italian Grand Prix. Italian fans are familiar with the driver and would surely love to see him driving for Ferrari.
Gasly and Charles Leclerc form one of the strongest friendships on the grid. Relationships between teammates are crucial to success.
What's more, being very good friends, the two drivers have great chemistry, which would make marketing and promotional obligations more authentic and enjoyable for drivers and everybody else.
The Ferrari team needs two strong, experienced drivers in order to go toe-to-toe with teams like Red Bull or Mercedes. Gasly outperformed all of his teammates ever since he left Red Bull, showing improvement and great consistency.
Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan labeled the Frenchman a "real talent" but also said in a recent interview he didn't think Alpine can make good enough improvement, and therefore, the 27-year-old will most likely be stuck in the midfield again in 2024.
Even though Alpine didn't have one of the top five cars in 2023, Gasly still managed to score podiums during the Dutch Grand Prix and during the Belgian Grand Prix Sprint race.
He continues to prove he deserves a seat in one of the top teams. Could Ferrari be the team that gives the Frenchman a shot after 2024? It is possible, but only time will tell.
