Sebastian Vettel recently jumped back into a race car, and he's now facing a difficult decision about his future in racing.
The four-time World Champion surprised many when he announced that he would be testing for Porsche in what may be his possible comeback to racing.
On March 21, 2024, the German driver sat behind the wheel of a Porsche 963 at MotorLand Aragón, completing 118 laps over 581km (361 miles) of distance, equivalent to almost two F1 Grand Prix races.
After the testing, the 36-year-old admitted that he's been keeping an eye on multiple racing disciplines, including the World Endurance Championships and 24 Hours of LeMans.
"Of course, I also keep an eye on other motorsport disciplines and know many drivers who are active in the WEC and Le Mans. At some point, my curiosity was so great that I had the idea of trying it out myself."
Vettel once famously said that it takes him only one lap to learn a new track, but this time, he didn't just have to learn a new track but also adjust his driving to a new car.
"After the seat adjustment, the simulator session and the roll-out in Weissach, I already had a good feeling. Driving the Porsche 963 on the track here in Aragón – that was definitely fun! I first had to get used to everything and find my rhythm."
However, the former Red Bull driver got accustomed to the new car very quickly, with the only difference being the roof above his head, which he was not used to in a Formula One car.
"The driving experience is different simply because of the roof over your head, as well as dealing with the higher weight and the tyres. The Porsche works drivers were very helpful and explained to me what was special and what I needed to get used to. That made it easy for me."
Now, Vettel faces a difficult decision. After completing over 100 laps in testing, he certainly knows that he could be competitive in Porsche 963, the only question is whether he will want to make return to the motorsport.
"I was curious how these cars behave, and that was the reason for the test. It was a very nice experience, I enjoyed it a lot, I had a lot of fun. Now I need to think and decide, and make my mind up what I maybe want to do in terms of racing in the future. But I don't know yet."
