Without surprise,
Max Verstappen is the best driver on the grid in 2023, according to average finishing positions.
Max Verstappen won 19 out of 22 races of the season, which drags his average up.
The Dutchman broke numerous records and was the only driver on the grid to finish every single race in 2023.
Moreover, the triple World Champion finished every single race of the season inside the points, which only further underlined his consistency this season.
Average finishing position is an interesting stat to look at because
Charles Leclerc, who was otherwise fifth in the Championship, would be third based on the data below.
Similarly,
Esteban Ocon would not have been in the top ten as he finished the season 12th in the Drivers' Championship.
One of the downsides of looking only at one set of numbers like this is they don't tell the whole story, and the
McLaren F1 team is a great example.
The Papaya team has only one driver inside the top ten here besides
finishing the season as the third-best team in the second half and having
Lando Norris in P6 and
Oscar Piastri in P9.
The reason for this is that McLaren started the season as an uncompetitive team at the back of the grid. Norris finished four of the first seven races in P17, which illustrates very well why his average is so low, and Piastri is not even in the top ten.
On the other hand, the table below highlights the differences between teammates like Max Verstappen with
Sergio Perez and Fernando Alosno with
Lance Stroll.
Both World Champions outperformed their teammates by four positions in every single race on average, which is a considerable margin.
