Toto Wolff recently hinted his
Mercedes team is making great progress concerning the development of the 2024 car.
Mercedes F1 team finished the 2023 season second in the Constructors' Championship, which is an improvement on third place in 2022. However, Silver Arrows were still far behind the leading Red Bull.
Lewis Hamilton shared he was
more satisfied with the car this season but still hopes for a big change going into 2024, as he wants Mercedes to fight for the Championship next year.
The team's principal, Toto Wolff, shared that everything that the team can change on the car will be changed as his team needs to make a huge step forward to compete for the title.
"The stopwatch never lies, and we will see next year in Bahrain. [We will have] a different chassis, different aerodynamics, different characteristics, different suspension, and everything that we can change, we [are going to] change."
As with every other team on the grid, Mercedes has been working on the 2024 car for a while in the background, and the team principal revealed simulation results are encouraging.
"So far, the results in the virtual world are positive, but we need to be careful in terms of managing our expectations."
On the other hand, Mercedes was once in a position where the team thought they would have a faster car than anybody, and it turned out not to be that way (beginning of 2022).
Similar to
McLaren's team principal, Wolff wants to manage the expectations. Mercedes seems to be aiming for a radical change in the concept of the car, which has great upside potential but also bears high risks. The team principal added:
"We need such a step in order to catch up to fight for a championship, but obviously, if you make a radical step, that means lots of new knowledge."
