Fernando Alonso suggested in an interview ahead of the 2024
Chinese Grand Prix that he probably signed the last contract of his career.
Aston Martin F1 driver Fernando Alonso
signed a multi-year contract extension with Aston Martin last week. It isn't clear how long the contract is, but it was revealed that it's a multi-year deal.
Multi-year means Alonso should continue with the British team for at least two more seasons (2025 and 2026).
The Spanish Matador is currently 42 and will be 45 in 2026.
Even though he said not too long ago that
he could race until 50, it wouldn't come as a surprise if this was Alonso's last contract in Formula 1. He said during the press conference before the fifth race weekend at
Shanghai International Circuit.
"This is probably my last contract so I had to make sure it was the right decision. It was a very happy decision for me, I'm very proud to represent Aston Martin for the next few years.
Alonso was one of the biggest drivers on the market this season, and it was said teams like
Mercedes and
Red Bull were potentially interested in him, so why did he decide to sign with his current team?
Firstly, Alonso recently admitted he talked to other teams but felt that Aston was the most serious about their interest.
Secondly, the British team has a great project and trajectory heading into the new regulations in 2026 with their strategic partner Aramco and Honda (power unit producer) - which will leave Red Bull after 2025. Alonso said:
"The new regulations in 2026 will mix the cars a little bit and be an opportunity, and we'll be the only team with Honda so hopefully we have an improvement there."
"And with Aramco, the bio fuels and sustainability - hopefully there is an opportunity there. Everything is in place to be a powerful team and I'm looking forward to being part of it."
