Red Bull Racing driver
Sergio Perez recently admitted he had some "really difficult moments" throughout the 2023 season.
Sergio Perez finished second in the Drivers' Championship in 2023, which sounds great.
However, the Mexican F1 driver scored 290 points less than his teammate Max Verstappen.
To put this result into perspective, if there were 11 more races in the season and Verstappen decided to go on holiday, Perez could not win the Championship even by victory and fastest lap in every single race without his teammate's attendance.
Being outperformed in such a manner by the only driver Perez could be compared to (because of equal machinery) does not earn the 33-year-old a good name.
Checo wanted to compete for the Championship after the first four races as he lacked only six points on his teammate after the
Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but everything went downhill for the Mexican from that point on. As quoted by Motorsport Italy, he said:
"In a few months I had really difficult moments, let's put it that way. I went from fighting for the World Championship to a very complicated situation, without having any confidence in the car."
On the other hand, Perez took it as a challenge and recovered towards the end of the season as his results improved in the last three races. He concluded:
"But in the end, if you want to stay at Red Bull, you have to be aware of how mentally strong you need to be to stay there. And that's something I've become stronger at. You learn a lot from the bad days, much more than from the good ones."
