Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez confessed he is not confident in the car throughout the 2023 season.
Sergio Perez had a great start to the season when he managed to win two out of the first four races. However, the Mexican driver has not won a single race since then.
While Checo played an equal game with Verstappen in races like Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, everything started getting away from him after the race in Miami, where Verstappen won from ninth place on the grid.
Sergio Perez tried to explain his struggles during a press conference ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, where he told the media:
"It has been the most complicated because I started fighting for the championship and it is not easy. People will never understand, what it's like to drive a car at 300 kph and not feel comfortable not knowing what the car is going to do in a corner, only the driver feels that."
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff stated a few weeks ago that the biggest problem of their team is when drivers have no confidence in the car.
Perez seems to have the same issue, and he is disappointed as the car seems to be great in the hands of Max Verstappen. He said: "And I think that's the most complicated thing because we had a great car."
"It was increasingly difficult for me to get the most out of it with the settings. And that made it a very complicated season, with many ups and downs, inconstant."
The Mexican driver mentioned the 2023 season has been "the most difficult season mentally" for him. The combination of the pressure and inability to get what he needs out of the car weighs down on Perez.
"Very good times, but also very bad times during the year. I would tell you that it has been the most difficult season mentally because, as a driver, you know that when you have difficult seasons, you can get the most out of the car, but this year, for me, it was not like that. I always had doubts with the car at many times."
There has been a lot of pressure on the performances of Sergio Perez, with many people speculating if his seat in Red Bull is pre-mandated for finishing second in the Drivers' Championship.
While these speculations were denied by both Perez and his team principal Christian Horner, it is clear that the Red Bull team aims for the one-two in the Drivers' Championship.
