Former F1 driver and a Skys Sports co-commentator Martin Brundle addressed the driving style of Oscar Piastri following the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix.
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris started the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix from the back of the grid following a disappointing qualification.
Unlike Norris, who crashed his car on lap three, the race went very well for Piastri, who gained multiple positions after first-lap incidents, which he could navigate and avoid flawlessly.
The Australian was on his way to achieving a decent result for his team, but then on lap 16, he had an incident with Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton who wanted to overtake him into turn 14 of the Las Vegas Strip Circuit.
The 22-year-old summarized the race with words: "A lot of people went wrong in that race, and I was in the same boat."
While Piastri managed to score only P10 for McLaren, he achieved the fastest lap of the race on lap 47, bringing two points home for his team that might prove to be crucial in the Championship fight with Aston Martin.
Martin Brundle wrote in his column for Sky Sports: "Oscar Piastri scored the fastest lap and had a super-aggressive drive from his lowly grid position."
Brundle suggested Piastri has a problem of getting involved in "too many skirmishes." And that statement has some truth if we look at the past few races.
The Australian had an incident with Esteban Ocon in Austin that put him out of the race. In Mexico City, he collided with Yuki Tsunoda, and in Sao Paulo, he fell victim to a lap one crash that basically destroyed his chances for points.
On the other hand, the former F1 driver believes that Oscar Piastri might become "mighty" one day as he gains more experience. At the end of the day, the 2023 season is the first season for Piastri.
"He perhaps gets involved in too many skirmishes, this time a racing incident with Hamilton, but when he adds better control and judgment to his speed, given more experience, he'll be mighty."
