McLaren driver
Lando Norris crashed on the 3rd lap of the 2023
Las Vegas Grand Prix at Las Vegas Street Circuit.
Mercedes F1 driver
George Russell predicted a very messy race start in Las Vegas when he told media after qualification that the race would be a "disaster" in the first five laps.
His predictions came true when we saw Virtual and Regular Safety Cars in the first three laps of the race. There were a couple of incidents that happened right after the race started.
Multiple drivers went too fast into the first turn, which resulted in carnage.
Max Verstappen pushed Charles Leclerc wide,
Fernando Alonso spun around,
Sergio Perez pushed
Valtteri Bottas from the back, and
Carlos Sainz collided with
Lewis Hamilton.
While Lando Norris managed to survive the first-turn disaster, he gained multiple positions as he moved up into P12. However, his race ended in the next lap when he crashed into a barrier before turn 12.
The McLaren driver lost his rear as he was going through turn 11 into turn twelve, which sent him into the wall on the side of the track and into the barriers far into turn 12.
The incident looked nasty for the 24-year-old, who celebrated his birthday this week, but he came on the radio to say he was okay and got out of the car seemingly unharmed.
As you watch the replay of the incident, you may notice Norris almost collected his teammate
Oscar Piastri with him but fortunately just missed him.
The cold track conditions made it super hard for drivers to control their cars. Russell came on the team radio to say it was like driving in the wet.
Norris had a decent chance to collect valuable points in the Championship fight against
Aston Martin. However, his crash gives McLaren's rivals a chance to catch up.
