Helmut Marko, who oversees Red Bull's drivers, changed their stance on lending Liam Lawson to another F1 team until the end of this season.
Red Bull's motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, wrote in his column during the summer break that one F1 team was interested in loaning Liam Lawson.
However, Red Bull wasn't interested in lending their reserve driver to another team back then, so his response was: "He is not available for that."
The 81-year-old didn't reveal which team specifically was interested, but we can only guess it had to be Williams. After Logan Sargeants crashed during FP3 in Zandvoort, more rumors emerged suggesting James Vowles was seriously considering putting another driver in the seat of the 23-year-old's car.
However, Williams's team principal doesn't have many alternatives, and of the few that he has, Liam Lawson might be the best option. Fortunately for him, Red Bull seems to have changed its stance on this situation.
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany after the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, Marko asserted he wouldn't be against this idea of possibly lending Lawson to Wiliams:
"If it's good for a young driver and he can gain some race experience we wouldn't stand in the way."
Although nothing is certain at the moment, it seems possible that we might see Red Bull's reserve driver in the Williams car alongside Alex Albon as soon as next race weekend (this week) in Monza.
Red Bull Racing's team principal, Christian Horner, told the media at Circuit Zandvoort that it would all depend on the terms, but Lawson could definitely be available already for the Italian Grand Prix.
"It would depend on which terms and if we needed him back that we could have him back quite quickly. If they needed a driver next weekend, we would be open to that. But that's a Williams question rather than one for us to answer."
