Triple World Champion
Max Verstappen responded to alleged talks with
Toto Wolff that were supposed to take place during the summer break.
A few days before the start of the 2024
Dutch Grand Prix weekend,
Mercedes announced that Max Verstappen would definitely be driving for them in 2025 despite their team principal's big efforts to sign the Dutchman.
Toto Wolff told the media at Zandvoort Circuit that he met with the
26-year-old during the summer break, but Verstappen didn't seem to recall it in front of the press.
The exact question asked whether Verstappen went to the meeting and how he reflected on it, but his answer was rather short. He said:
"Which meeting? I don't remember."
The Mercedes team principal has spoken a lot about the triple World Champion in recent months as he pursues signing him for the second seat.
Quite a few fans grew bored of Wolff, constantly suggesting that there was a chance that Verstappen would go to Mercedes when the Dutchman himself kept saying he was happy at
Red Bull.
Asked whether Wolff should stop talking about him and whether he should move on, the Red Bull Racing driver responded:
"No, I mean, everyone can say what they want. And I get on very well with Toto. I think he's very open about what's happening within his team, right?"
"Also, I think with the driver line-up and stuff. So there's nothing wrong with that. And at the same time, also, I just focus on my job. There's a lot to do anyway. So, yeah, we just focus on that."
While it is now clear that Max Verstappen will be racing for Red Bull in 2025, Wolff stays hopeful that he might change the 26-year-old's mind as soon as before the start of the 2026 season so that he can join the German squad before the start of new regulations.
