Aston Martin's team principal,
Mike Krack, tried to avoid setting high expectations for 2023 as he said his team still doesn't understand AMR23 (2023 car) completely.
Aston Martin had a very strong beginning of the season when
Fernando Alonso scored podium after podium, but the British team fell a bit behind after the summer break.
Other F1 teams like
Ferrari,
Mercedes, and
McLaren introduced new upgrades, and Aston Martin could not keep pace with them as the team seemed to struggle with understanding their own car.
Aston managed to recover by the end of the season as
Alonso managed to score another podium during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, but Mike Krack warned they still don't understand completely everything. As reported by
lastwordonsports.com, he said:
"We did understand the car by the end of the season – but it would wrong to say we understood absolutely everything about the AMR23."
The Spanish matador recently
named changes he would like to see made to the Aston Maritin's 2024 car, and Krack says the team knows the direction in which they want to go:
"We understood a great deal, we know what we want to do for 2024 and the direction we need to go in with next year’s car."
The team principal tried to explain knowing the direction does not equal competing for podiums in 2024, and his team still has a lot of work.
"But that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to turn up at the season-opener in Bahrain next year and be fighting for the race win."
Red Bull went into the winter break with quite a headstart,
Mercedes suggested they are already seeing
some "good gains" in simulations, and
Ferrari will be changing their car significantly as well.
Aston Martin proved during the 2022-2023 winter break they can make big steps forward. Do you believe Aston Martin could compete for race wins during the upcoming season?
