Aston Martin had built a car that exceeded everybody's expectations and achieved amazing results in 2023, but as Fernando Alonso described, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
Aston Martin F1 team moved up two positions in the Constructors' Championship compared to the previous 2022 season thanks to incredible progress in car development through winter break.
Fernando Alonso managed to score eight podiums in the 2023 season, which is a fantastic result, but it could have been better if Aston Martin managed to be more consistent. As reported by motorsport.com, the Spanish matador told the media:
"I think we need to find some consistency. Maybe one of the weak points was the car has to operate in a very narrow window."
Many other teams like Mercedes or Ferrari struggled with oscillating performances throughout the year, but the 42-year-old believes his team struggled the most.
"It’s the same for everybody [with the ground-effect cars proving particularly sensitive], but it seems that we’re struggling a little bit, and it will be nice if we can always perform at a stable level next year."
Aston Martin purchases its power units from Mercedes, and as Williams F1 team proved, these power units can make the car quite fast in a straight line, but Alonso's team couldn't quite extract the most out of them.
"Also, if we can improve the straight-line speed - I think that was, in performance numbers, our weak point. Always a little bit too slow on the straights."
The Spaniard explained Aston Martin could make the car faster, but then it would compromise other areas. On the other hand, the double World Champion suggested his team will fix all the issues for the 2024 season.
"If we wanted to be as fast as the others, we have to drop too much the rear wing. Then we ended up slow in the corners as well. So, that was probably the loop that we could not go out [of] this season. But I think we have some ideas for next year as well and everything should be better."
