Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya explained why he doesn't see Max Verstappen as the favorite for the 2025 Drivers' Championship title.

Red Bull Racing F1 driver Max Verstappen won four Drivers' Championship titles in a row from 2021 to 2024. However, during the last season, Red Bull lost the performance edge they had over their rivals.

This became clear in the second half of 2024 when the 27-year-old won only two out of ten Grand Prix races. Going into the winter break ahead of the 2025 season, teams like McLaren and Ferrari seemed at least on par with Red Bull or even faster.

Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya saw that as a clear indication that Max Verstappen won't be the favorite for the 2025 Drivers' title, despite his qualities and previous success in this generation of F1 cars. He told Marca:

"I think it will be very difficult. Unless Red Bull makes a big move next year, I think it will be very difficult for Max to become champion with the car he has at the moment. They don't have the speed they need. The car is not that fast."
"I think if you have seen the races and the last few years in F1, it is impossible to consider Max as the favorite."

Montoya believes that McLaren and Ferrari drivers will fight for the championship title in 2025. Interestingly, the former F1 driver thinks even Mercedes, which finished behind Red Bull in 2024, will be faster next season.

"You have to wait and see what Red Bull comes up with, but I would say the title next year will go between the McLarens and maybe Ferrari. I would give a Mercedes more chance next year than a Red Bull."

Fortunately for Red Bull fans, Max Verstappen suggested his team were able to identify the underlying problems and now believes they can eliminate them going into 2025. Can Red Bull retake their position as the fastest team on the grid? That remains to be seen.
