Christian Horner elaborated on the reason why he could not be best friends with
Mercedes team principal
Toto Wolff.
Christian Horner and Toto Wolff share one of the biggest rivalries in F1 at the moment. They are the team principals of the only two teams that have won championships in the last 14 years.
Mercedes has been on top for quite a long time since 2014, and they had no match for seven seasons, but in 2021,
Red Bull managed to bring the challenge to Silver Arrows which put a new spark into the rivalry.
Both Toto Wolff and Christian Horner are considered the top team principals on the grid at the moment, and both share one common trait - they would do everything for their own team.
Wolff and Horner have had their tense moments during various arguments throughout throughout the 2021 and 2022 seasons, and many fans asked whether the two team principals hated each other.
Then, after the end of the 2023 season,
the two took an iconic photo with arms around their backs, looking like best mates, and many fans were confused and asked if they were friends.
The Red Bull Racing F1 team principal recently clarified how he sees the relationship with Wolff saying he has there is a lot of respect, but they could not be best friends. He said on Sky’s Secrets of Success:
"I have a huge amount of respect for everything that he’s done and achieved, but we’re competitors. I’ve never been a believer that you can be the best mate with your competitor. I think it’s dishonest."
While the two team principals might share a nice moment after the end of a challenging season, Horner suggested they are still competitors in the first place. He added:
"I want everybody in my team to see that whoever we’re racing against is the competition. That’s who we’re there to compete with."
