Speaking to the media ahead of the 2024
Chinese Grand Prix,
Lewis Hamilton shared his opinion on driving in F1 in his 40s and
Fernando Alonso's latest contract extension.
Fernando Alonso
signed a "multi-year" contract extension with Aston Martin last week (April 11th), which means he should be racing for the team at least until 2026.
This also means that the Spanish Matador will be racing in F1 at the age of 45. Alonso had a funny response, saying
he at least won't be the only driver in his 40s starting from 2025.
Lewis Hamilton signed a multi-year deal with
Ferrari, which also meant he should race for the Italian team at least until 2026. The British driver will turn 40 next January, to which he said:
"I never thought I would race into my 40s. I'm pretty sure I said I wouldn't go into my 40s racing. But I think it's such a crazy trip life."
The
Mercedes driver then suggested he still feels fit enough and made fun of his 25-year-old teammate George Russell for spending more time with the physiotherapist.
"I don't feel like I'm nearing 40 years old. I feel young still, and I think he (George Russell) has got more problems physically than I do today. I generally feel great."
Hamilton also joked about the
Aston Martin driver's contract extension, saying he's happy he won't be the oldest F1 driver on the grid, at least, and acknowledged Alonso's qualities.
"I feel it's real positive, first because it means I'm not the oldest driver here so that's the best part. But also, Fernando is one of the best drivers we've had in the sport, so for him to continue to be here, to continue to have the output that he's had just shows what is possible."
