Reports suggest Formula 1 is about to be discussed and might introduce a new point-scoring system as early as 2025.
The meeting between FOM (Formula One Management), FIA (F1's regulatory body), and F1 teams during a regular gathering of the F1 Commission in Geneva is set to take place this week.
A number of important topics are supposed to be discussed, one of them being the introduction of a new points system for the top ten finishing positions in a Grand Prix race.
The most significant aspect of the new system is that the point-scoring positions would be extended from the top ten to the top 12.
According to Motorsport.com, the proposal for change from the current system comes as a result of "lobbying" from smaller teams on the grid.

The new system seems sensible, especially considering the 2024 season when the top five teams seemed to have separated from the bottom five in pace.
If all drivers from the top five teams finish the race, the bottom five have almost zero chance of scoring points. The newly proposed system would motivate the bottom five teams more.
The change in the point-scoring system doesn't happen very often in Formula 1. In fact, it has happened only four times since 1990.
In 1991, a new system was introduced where only the top six finishers scored points, and the winner only received 10. In 2003, the previous system was extended from the top 6 to the top 8 drivers.
The most significant change came in 2010, when the points scored for the first position in the race increased to 25, and the point-scoring positions also increased, this time to the top ten.
The 2010 system is also the one that we know until today. A small addition was introduced in 2019 when it was decided the driver in the top ten with the fastest lap of the race would receive 1 additional point.
