Ferrari still hopes to challenge Red Bull for the Constructors' Championship in 2024, but Vitantonio Liuzzi (former F1 driver) stated that the Italian team "still needs a couple of years."
According to McLaren driver Lando Norris, Scuderia Ferrari has made the most significant development step since the end of last season.
The 24-year-old could feel it, especially during the
Japanese Grand Prix, where McLaren had a clear advantage over Ferrari in 2023, but this time around, they just couldn't match the pace of the red cars.
However, even though Ferrari made such significant progress, the team is still two to three-tenths per lap slower than
Red Bull at most circuits.
Some tracks, like Albert Park Circuit (Australia), Monza (Italy), Marina Bay (Singapore), or Miami,
naturally suit the team from Maranello.
However, if Ferrari wants to compete for the Constructors' title this year, it will need to get closer to Red Bull. Both
Carlos Sainz and
Charles Leclerc seem to have
high expectations from Ferrari's next upgrade, which will be introduced during the seventh round of the season.
Vitantonio Liuzzi, on the other hand, thinks it will still be a couple of years before the Italian team can win the Championship. He told Corriere dello Sport:
"Ferrari has shown that it has made progress. It is not ready for the title, but it will have its say in many races."
"It will be an entertaining championship. Then if Red Bull's reliability problems continue for a long time, they could be a problem for themselves. I think Ferrari needs a couple of years to aim for the title, but it's there."
Sainz, who is leaving the team at the end of the 2024 season, does not have a couple of years and wants to end his time with Ferrari on a high (winning at least a Constructors' title). Do you think he will be able to do that?
