According to a recent report, Aston Martin wants to retain Fernando Alonso with a multi-year deal even beyond the season 2025.
An article from motorsport.com suggested that factions within Aston Martin were interested in replacing Fernando Alonso with Carlos Sainz from the 2025 season.
This came as a bit of a surprise after the Aston Martin team principal, Mike Krack, said it is no secret they want to continue with Alonso and are waiting for his decision.
This view is also supported by a report from motorsport-total.com, which suggested the British team wants to ideally retain the Spanish matador even beyond the 2025 season- which means the team is offering him a multi-year deal.
The main selling point for the Spaniard are apparently the Honda power units (PUs) that the British team will have from 2026.
Having its own power units should give Aston Martin an advantage and move them closer to competing for the championship title.
What's more, it is clear that Honda can produce powerful PUs, as Red Bull, which won the last three championships, currently works with them. Motorsport-total quotes Mike Krack as saying:

"If we have the wind tunnel available, and with the whole thing completed – together with Honda – it's certainly attractive. Definitely more so than two years ago."

"But we also know that it's [even though] it's nice to have all these, you have to deliver on the track."

Aston Martin finished the 2023 season as the fifth-fastest team, and that is also where they started the 2024 season. However, Alonso is at the end of his career and doesn't have time for long-term projects.
This means that Aston needs to improve rapidly to maximize their chances of keeping the 42-year-old within their team. Krack added:

"That's the only thing you're measured on, that's the most important thing. We still have to do more… We won't stop."

"We'll bring more parts over the course of the season to motivate him and make him happy at Aston Martin."
