Red Bull motorsport advisor
Helmut Marko took a dig at
Toto Wolff for his past statements concerning his relationship with
Lewis Hamilton.
Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff entered
Mercedes around the same period of time. The two have worked together for 11 years and achieved incredible success.
The seven-time World Champion collected six of his seven titles throughout his time with Mercedes and helped the team achieve eight consecutive Constructor's Championship titles.
While drivers are quite often considered only as someone who comes to the team for a short period of time, Hamilton has been with Mercedes for so long that Wolff said he is part of the family.
In 2024, Hamilton and Mercedes will break the record for the longest driver-team collaboration in the history of F1. It seemed like the 39-year-old, Wolff, and Silver Arrows were inseparable.
The Austrian team principal, who praised his super open, honest, straightforward, and friendly relationship with Hamilton, admitted he was surprised to learn about the news.
Apparently, this was the first decision in their 11 years of collaboration that the seven-time World Champion made completely without his awareness.
Helmut Marko, being the man of controversial and bold statements, could not resist but taunt the Mercedes team principal when a Wolff's past statement was put to him by
OE24.
The reporter: "Wolff said not long ago that he was so close to Hamilton that no piece of paper would fit between the two."
Marko: "...but a Ferrari contract would."
While Hamilton's decision to leave Mercedes without talking to Wolff might sting, the team principal has to leave it all behind them as he still has one season of collaboration with the 39-year-old that starts in about two weeks.
