Toto Wolff addressed comments of Max Verstappen about the situation inside Mercedes now that the team has to go through an entire season with Lewis Hamilton knowing that he will leave.
As Max Verstappen recently suggested, the fact that Lewis Hamilton decided to leave Mercedes and announced it one year ahead creates a bit of an "awkward situation" for the team.
The Dutchman talked mainly about sharing sensitive information, which the seven-time World Champion could take with him to Ferrari, and said that at one point, Hamilton probably will have to be left out.
When the triple World Champion's comments about the "awkward situation" were put to Toto Wolff during the press conference in Bahrain, the Mercedes team principal said:
"The morale in the team and the dynamics we have this year has been over the winter, it’s been great. We spend a lot of time trying to look to introspect and say, what is it that we can do better?"
Former F1 driver Martin Bundle said Mercedes will have to favor George Russell at one point as the team will stop sharing some crucial information with Hamilton at one point in the season. Wolff continued:
"And what we’re seeing is an organization that is really buzzing and is keen to fight and develop a car that’s quicker whilst sticking to our mindset and to our values. And this is something we want to deliver this year."
The team principal of Silver Arrows admitted it was a bit of an awkward situation at the beginning, but he asserted the whole team is already past that stage.
"And it may have been awkward at the beginning of how are we doing this for the rest of the season. But now everything has fallen into place, and you know it’s just a concentration of the moment, and the next race is to come."
