Max Verstappen discussed Oscar Piastri's position within McLaren as he suggested he wouldn't have accepted being the number two driver.
McLaren Racing F1 team claims that they have two number-one drivers, which essentially means one does not get prioritized over another.
However, when it became clear that Lando Norris was the only one who could still put up a challenge in the fights against Max Verstappen for the Drivers' Championship, the British team decided it would be beneficial to prioritize him.
McLaren's team principal, Andrea Stella, said he talked to Oscar Piastri and that the Australian driver could theoretically even give up a victory for Norris if it made sense.
When Max Verstappen was asked about the situation that Piastri found himself in, he suggested he would never have accepted being number two. He told Motorsport.com:
"He's definitely not a [number two driver], and if I were him, I would never accept it. For me, it's easy to talk, of course, because I've been in Formula 1 for 10 years, and it's Oscar's second season, so it is always harder to put your foot down."
"But he's just a great F1 driver who doesn't deserve it to give up wins and positions and play second fiddle because he's asked to."
Although Piastri did agree to help, the right opportunity has not presented itself so far. Quite the opposite, Lando Norris helped the Australian on his way to victory in Baku.
While the 23-year-old appreciated the kind words from his rival, he highlighted that he didn't really feel like he was giving up everything for Norris.
"Personally, I think Max is a very straightforward guy. He says what he thinks. We all know that. I think in my position, I don't see it as being number one or number two."
"My victory in Baku is a perfect example of the fact that I didn't give up everything for Lando this season."
