Helmut Marko yet again revealed when
Red Bull Racing plans to make the final decision on whether
Sergio Perez gets to drive for them in 2025.
Although Sergio Perez stated ahead of the race weekend in Austin last week that he would 100% drive for the Austrian F1 team in 2025, the words of one of Red Bull's bosses suggest otherwise.
The F1 team's motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, hinted a couple of times that the Mexican driver still has to show significant
improvement to
retain his seat (despite already having
signed a contract for 2025).
Speaking with
F1-Insider after the latest race in the United States, where the 34-year-old finished in
P7, Helmut Marko warned that Sergio Perez's
contract with the team
means nothing as long as he keeps performing the way he does:
"Perez may have a contract, but Formula 1 is a performance-based society. If the performance isn't right, contracts are of no use."
Former F1 driver Johny Herbert suggested after the
United States Grand Prix that he
believed Red Bull should and will replace the Mexican driver already before or right after this week's race weekend in his home country.
However, Helmut Marko said the plan is to wait until the end of the season in order to evaluate who gets to drive for Red Bull Racing in 2025.
"At the end of the season, we will sit down together and then decide who is the best teammate for Verstappen at Red Bull."
The 81-year-old previously said that
Yuki Tsunoda's and Liam Lawson's performance in the last six Grand Prix weekends of the season would be crucial in
determining whether any of them can get the
promotion to the A team - Red Bull Racing.
Lawson showed an incredible performance during his first race of the 2024 season in Austin, where he went from P19 to P9, finishing less than 11 seconds behind Perez, who started from P9 on a much faster car. If the Kiwi driver can retain such a level of performance, he might become a serious threat to the 34-year-old.
