Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, the drivers who finished first and second during the most recent race at Imola Circuit, shared their expectations going into the race week in Monaco.
Formula One heads to Circuit de Monaco for the eighth race of the 2024 season. The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious and challenging races on the calendar, and every driver wants to win.
However, we know that not every driver will have the chance. Expectations are that the winner will very likely be decided already on Saturday, and it's going to come down to a battle between Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren.
Max Verstappen won the most recent race in Imola, but only by a mere seven-tenths ahead of Lando Norris in P2. Asked what this success means going into the race weekend in Monaco, he told the media:
"Nothing, because Monaco is again completely different. But you can see, of course, it's clearly very close now."
"You need to really nail all of qualifying to get a lap together there, get the tires to work as well when it matters; it's always very tricky. Monaco is very special, I would say, in that sense."
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was a very important race for McLaren, and their result confirmed that they should be able to challenge Red Bull with Verstappen for wins repeatedly from now on. Norris said:
"We're on the right track. We're fighting against Ferraris and Red Bulls, and that's the expectation now. This is where we are and this is what we have to do."
"So if we were anything worse than second today, I think we didn't do a good job and we would have been disappointed. I think we want to do the same again, but it's such a different track. We need to see how we are on Friday and ask me again then."
