Max Verstappen was asked what drivers he would pick to have on his team if he was a team principal, and you might not guess the two drivers he picked.
One of the frequent debates among F1 fans and experts is which driver pairing in F1 is the strongest at the moment. Many have varying opinions, but it is not often that drivers get asked this question.
Auto Motor Sport asked the triple World Champion directly which two drivers he would pick to have on his team if he were a team principal in F1 at this moment. He said:
"Everyone is in different cars differently. I find it difficult to choose one because there are so many good racing drivers at the moment."
Every F1 driver has to believe he is the best among everybody, and so Verstappen asked whether he could pick himself as one of the drivers.
"Then myself. And I would take Lando for that. He is still young, with a long career ahead of him. And he can also be very, very fast."
Lando Norris showed immense potential throughout the previous couple of seasons, and when he got a more competitive car in 2023, he proved he could go toe-to-toe with World Champions like Verstappen himself,
Lewis Hamilton, or
Fernando Alonso.
When the Dutchman was asked who the second driver alongside Norris would be if he couldn't pick himself, he chose Norris's current teammate,
Oscar Piastri.
"I would take Lando and Oscar. So the McLaren pairing. Both are good. Lando is just a little older than Oscar. I think Oscar is a fast rookie."
In terms of points, Piastri finished the season far behind his teammate. On the other hand, the final result did not reflect the on-track comparison between the two drivers.
The Australian was able to match the pace and even beat Norris on multiple occasions.
He was named the greatest rookie since Verstappen and
received the Rookie of the Year award. The
Red Bull driver added:
"He still has things to learn, can improve at the racing pace, for example. But from what I see, he's a smart guy. He will win his races."
