Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff said he sent a message to Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen after he called his interest for Wikipedia, which nobody reads anyway.

Max Verstappen is having his most dominant season ever. It seems nowadays that the Dutchman breaks a new record every single race as he just keeps winning.

In the most recent race in Mexico City, for example, Verstappen broke a record for the most wins in a season when he won the 16th out of 19 races this season so far.

Besides the record for the most wins in a season, Verstappen also led the most laps in a single season, collected the most points (can get more than 500 in Brazil), and achieved the most consecutive wins.

After the breaking of the records, the Mercedes team principal has been asked to react to the huge success of Flying Dutchman. Back then, Toto Wolff said records like that are "only interesting for Wikipedia, which nobody reads anyway."

Wolff perhaps wanted to say something else, but by saying what he said, he ended up dismissing the success of his opponent, which made him look a bit like a sore loser. Wolff recently told De Telegraaf:

"I sent Max a message to explain and he was OK with it. If you don't know the context, it seems like I don't recognise such a great record. But the point was that Niki Lauda used to always laugh at records with us."

Apparently, the Mercedes team principal messaged Verstappen to explain his statement. He explained Nici Lauda used to laugh with Mercedes at records like this. Wolff admitted it wasn't "the most intelligent" thing he ever said.

"He called it a relic of the past and always looked forward. That's the story behind it, but it wasn't the most intelligent thing I ever said."
